New customer within Subsea

MK Test Systems Ltd have recently commissioned two test systems for TE Seacon, based in Texas, USA. Seacon needed a solution for testing HV subsea connectors and cable assemblies for the offshore Oil and Gas Industry.

About the Customer

TE Seacon are world leader in the manufacture of electrical underwater mateable connectors. These are typically used in deep sea drilling control, ROV, AUV systems, communications and power.

The Units Under Test

The connectors are designed for operation in typical subsea environmental conditions; high pressure and temperature, and supply voltages and currents up to 3.5kV and 100Amps respectively.

The UUTs are designed to meet the joint industry SEPS standard for subsea power connectors, jumpers, and assemblies.

The Solution

To ensure SEPS compliance, both test systems can perform a wide range of electrical tests including the following:

  • Continuity
  • Shorts
  • Capacitance
  • Insulation
  • Hipot

Insulation tests up to 8.5kV measure electrical insulation up to 250GΩ. The system design allows for up to 60×2 wire or 30×4 wire test points in the standard cabinet. Adding additional test point modules expands the system’s capabilities.

The MK control software API allows the system to run from a master controller. This means that electrical testing can then be performed in sequence with external test equipment. Typically in the case of subsea connectors testing this will be a pressure vessel.
