Electrical Test Systems for the Aerospace Sector

Over the past 29 years, MK Test’s equipment has enabled aircraft manufacturers and suppliers to efficiently test all the electrical wiring at key stages during the production process.  From harness shop, airframe section equipping, to the final assembly line (FAL).

A typical commercial aircraft has around 170 km of electrical wiring which controls every aspect of an aircraft’s electrical systems. The integrity of every connection is vital in order for the aircraft to operate normally. 

We’ve worked with major OEMS such Airbus and The Boeing Company for Final Assembly Line (FAL) testing, as well as engine manufacturers such as Rolls Royce.

Aerospace Applications

Aircraft Engines

The use of our systems in the manufacture and maintenance of aircraft engines has been proven to reduce production time, reduce MRO turnaround time, and eliminate costly test cell failures. Capital recovery on engine test systems is typically in the region of 6 months!

Cable Harness

Wherever a cable harness is being assembled it is essential that the harness or loom is tested for build and or material defects. Tests typically include continuity resistance, short circuit failure, high voltage insulation resistance, AC dielectric or HiPot test and Capacitance measurement.

Connector

Connectors are at the heart of all interconnect systems. A connector’s ability to conduct to specification, and isolate individual circuits is critical to a products operation. Our test systems are used by many of the world’s leading connector manufacturers; and we can count leading connector manufacturers such as Amphenol, Glenair, Deutsch, TE Connectivity, Souriau, Wago, Conesys and AB Connectors amongst our customers.

Equipped Assembly & Function Testing

When a wiring harness is fitted into a major component, such as a train carriage, aircraft wing or power panel, MK Test equipment is used to ensure that the installation has not impacted negatively on the performance and integrity of the harness components, wiring and connectors. Installed harnesses and components are tested in situ, testing continuity resistance, short circuit failures, high voltage insulation resistance and HiPot dielectric strength, and function testing of active components such as actuators, relays, solenoids and lamps.

Final Assembly Line

MK Test regularly supplies testing equipment for final assembly lines (FAL) of aircraft, train carriages and vehicles. While components need to be tested when leaving their production stations, final assembly testing provides an absolute assurance of reliability, to the end customer. Here the correct format of test system is important and MK Test are able to supply distributed switching modules and LRU switching modules in both active LRU and dummy LRU format.

Ground Bond, Loop & Joint

The primary aim of electrical bonding on an aircraft or vehicle is defined as the establishment of a current path between electrical conductive parts, in order to assure electrical continuity. This allows for the prevention of electrical shocks, fault detection, flow/escape of electrostatic charge and leakage currents and flow/escape of lightning currents. Loop resistance testing (LRT) has become more of an issue in the aircraft industry, with the move away from metal airframe towards composite aero structures. In addition to the standard bonding requirement, composite aircraft rely on effective bonding paths to prevent heating at high resistance joints and the potential delamination of composite materials.
